Used to add subtitles to online learning services for working adults, creating a diverse learning environment
Schoo Inc. operates the online learning service "Schoo" for working adults. The content they distribute has a transcription function (some exclusions apply). We spoke with Yukiko Sato and Takahiro Oda, product managers in the Product Planning Department, about the background and effects of adding subtitles.
Issues/background
Meet the needs for subtitles for lesson videos
Eliminate barriers to learning
Schoo offers daily live lessons on the theme of "What working adults should learn now for the future." Our mission is to "eliminate graduation from the world," and we aim to create a world where everyone can continue learning by removing all barriers that prevent people from learning.
We have received many comments from students so far, such as "I remember more when I read than when I watch videos," "I want to take the course at my own pace, slowly digesting the content," and "I want to learn exactly what I want to know in my spare time," so we decided to add an "AI transcription function" to realize diverse learning for individuals. The transcription is based on the AmiVoice API.
Key Drivers of the Adoption
After comparing six companies, we chose this one due to its high recognition accuracy and low implementation difficulty.
After comparing six companies based on criteria such as voice recognition accuracy, cost, and compatibility with existing architecture, the deciding factors for adopting AmiVoice API were its high accuracy in actual trials, ease of implementation and low difficulty of introduction, as well as the following benefits:
・No.1 voice recognition market share
・Providing APIs/SDKs etc. for various development environments
・Flexible pricing system
・Strength in technical terms
Introduction Results
To enable diverse learning to be tailored to the student's environment, etc.

The transcribed text will be displayed as subtitles on the screen and as a script at the bottom. The script will also allow you to jump to the corresponding video playback position and obtain the URL for that position.
The AmiVoice API makes the following possible, enabling diverse learning experiences tailored to each student's learning environment and goals.
■ Deepen your own learning and share it with your peers
After taking a course, I can now flexibly deepen my learning according to my level of understanding and learning environment, by reading the text to review any parts I missed or want to understand better, or by watching only those parts in my spare time.
Furthermore, the URL obtained from the script can now be shared with fellow learners to deepen their understanding of the topic and to use it for collaborative learning.
■People with hearing impairments can also learn
Subtitles and scripts are available to make the event accessible to those with hearing impairments.
Users who have used the transcription feature have commented with delight, "I hope that as the number of videos compatible with the transcription feature increases, it will become possible for everyone in the company, including those who have had difficulty viewing videos in the past, to watch them."
